Medical Malpractice Payouts By State

An analysis of medical malpractice payouts from 2011 - 2013 published by The Washington Post shows that more than $3.7 billion were awarded last year.

The top ten states per capita in awards paid out were:

1. New York - $689,800,300
2. Pennsylvania - $356,855,500
3. New Jersey - $249,865,850
4. Massachusetts - $140,476,500
5. Connecticut - $53,832,750
6. Washington, DC - $7,368,750
7. Maryland - $102,158,550
8. Rhode Island - $36,407,000
9. New Hampshire - $25,491,250
10. Illinois - $173,048,750
